The pain of Moris’s traversing his adolescence where he must navigate the trauma of war, particularly with his newly discovered understanding that Jews, Serbs, Romani, political opponents, and anyone not adhering to Nazi doctrine, are being targeted for genocide by Hitler’s “final solution.” As a Partisan, Moris hides his Jewish identity fearing reprisals from some of his comrades. This adds another layer to the many challenges he faces. During his journey he has only a few trusted friends in his fighting unit. He relies on them for validation that he’ll be alright, but he learns that one must be willing to die for the cause of liberation. This is a very tormenting concept for a boy to absorb .
